  1. Following a meeting with the senior management of City Motors Bristol, they have kindly agreed to once again sponsor our track day next year. I have therefore booked the circuit for Friday 30th June. I will post up more details as and when they are available.
  2. This year we are going to be at the following restaurant venues where anyone is free to join us: Thursday Evening - GBK Cabot Circus (7pm) Friday Evening - Wild Beer Co. Wapping Wharf (7pm) Saturday Evening - Chomp Grill (7pm)
  3. The reason I have 2 different grades of oil is thankfully the T4 only needs a 10W40 even with track usage as it does not suffer from the pressure losses that the Blessed 5-pots do!! I like to try and have a suitable viscosity for the intended purpose as I've found that an oil which is too thick does have its fair share of issues too!
  4. Catering - Pizza Buffet This Year The Tavern Clubhouse will be closed again this year and we will have limited onsite catering from "Pizzamonkey" Bristol. They will be selling bacon rolls from 9am-11.30am and then serving pizzas from 11.30am - 3.30pm. We have taken on board all the feedback about the long waiting times for pizzas so will be trying out a pizza buffet this year - there will be a separate tent with (sliced) pizza, fries and salad on offer, which participants can help themselves to. During signing in, all drivers will be given a lunch voucher which will allow entry to the buffet tent where you can help yourself to slices of pizza and a can of soft drink. Drivers can also have free tea and / or coffee by showing your wrist band. Passengers and other participants / spectators can also get a lunch voucher for the pizza buffet and free coffee / tea from either Simon Chiu or myself, for a £10 donation towards the Air Ambulance Charity. For everyone else, cups of coffee / tea, and cans of soft drinks can be obtained from the pizza van for a 50p donation, per serving, towards the nominated Charity. The following pizza topping combinations will be served: Margherita with fresh buffalo mozzarella, basil and olive oil (v) Seasoned chicken, spicy chorizo & fresh chillies Smoked prosciutto ham, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, portobello mushroom, garlic oil Spicy Pepperoni, peppered beef pastrami, spicy chorizo, red onion, chilli oil

Here's the schedule for the track day: 30 June 2017 - City Motors Bristol / T5D5 Charity Track Day at Castle Combe Racing Circuit, Wiltshire: 0745 – drivers arrive and sign in / noise testing 0830 – drivers briefing starts at the Strawford Centre 0900 – track opens; sighting laps behind pace car 0930 – track goes full open pit lane 1600 – track closes followed immediately by prize raffle 2000 - dinner in Bristol The event sponsors for this year are: City Motors Bristol (Main Sponsor) RTS Ltd.   6. I agree that a good quality 10W40 will probably do the job, but I've never run that through the summer on the car, and been able to monitor temps and pressures so I can't say that for certain. A 15W50 or higher will more than sufficient, from my own experience. Yeah I'm sure I'll wake up to the group assembled and protesting outside my front door tomorrow morning! There's nowt wrong with mixing oils from the same manufacturer and from the same range, e.g. a 10W40 and 10W60 Redline Motor Oil. It's probably not a good idea to mix oils from different manufacturers, however, due to the possibility of different additives etc. - I won't mix Redline Motor Oil and Race Oil of the same grade for that very reason!
  7. Firstly in terms of brand of oil, I've been using Redline oils for many years - not necessarily the cheapest but the car has held up very well with their products so I see no reason to change. Other forum members use Shell Helix Ultra 10W60 with good results so that's a good alternative. As for the viscosity, I go purely on the readings from the oil temp and pressure gauge in the car and have therefore been mixing 2 different grades of Redline oils to get the desired viscosity - for summer road use, I've been mixing 4 quarts of 10W40 and 2 quarts of 10W60 and that gives a reading of approx 1.2bar @ 100 deg C, at idle. In winter, I run 5 quarts of 10W40 and 1 quart of 15W50 as the oil temps stay much lower and hence pressure is higher, and if it's a particularly cold winter then I've been able to get away with just 10W40 because it's really hard to get the oil temps above 90 deg C. For track use, I've been mixing 4 quarts of 10W60 with 2 quarts of 10W40 and that has given good results up to oil temps of 135 deg C. Mind you, the "track ECU" has been recalibrated to have an idle speed of 1000rpm so that helps a fair bit too.
  8. IMHO a 5W30 is not suitable for that engine, especially once you have the wear which will be commensurate with that sort of mileage. Volvo stipulate that the minimum oil pressure the engine should be run at, at idle and an oil temperature of 100 deg C, should be 1 bar - I can guarantee you that you'll not see that minimum oil pressure with a 5W30......

  11. The Aquamist jets are 1/8 NPT thread pitch - the AEM is very similar if not identical. The Aquamist jet, hands-down, has a better spread pattern when compared to both AEM and Devils Own jets. The Aquamist nozzle selection is based on the port diameter - I run a 0.8mm jet with is around 400cc/min with a 150psi pump. The have jet sizes up to 1.2mm and below is the flow-chart taken off their website. Aquamist also do jets with inbuilt check valves but I prefer to buy the check valve separately - that way you have the option to change just the valve if it fails. The other benefit with Aquamist jets is you can clean them out; it's a bit fiddly but possible. It's probably best to run an inline filter though so that the jet does not block up.
  12. I gave up with both Devils Own and AEM nozzles ages back - have been running an Aquamist jet since and not had any issues with it.
  13. I’m very grateful to Tony McMillan for very kindly opening up his business for all of us to attend an open day at his premises the day after our track day. Kings are a well established Volvo Independent Specialist garage with technicians (including Volvo Master Techs) who have experience with both early and later Volvo cars. Tony has invited us from 9.30am – 12.30pm and is happy to have worked booked in for the day, or for anyone to turn up on the day if you have any concerns about your car. He will be offering preferential labour rates on the day for all work carried out – Kings are fully equipped with the latest version of ViDA so can undertake all work, including software updates. Tony can be contacted on 01373 822637 should you wish to book your car in or discuss anything relating to your car with him. Once we wrap up at Kings, the plan is to head over to The Royal Oak Pub in Hawkeridge, which is only a few minutes drive away – some will remember this as the pub we had lunch in last year. If you have any specific questions about the open day, please don’t hesitate to post up and I’ll do my best to answer them.
  14. The restaurant choices this year were largely based on feedback from last year. The mayhem at Steak of the Art last year resulted from 12 people actually confirming they were coming, but 26 turning up on the day...... - in fairness they did their best to sort us all out. The Chinese place next to the IBIS has closed for good, and many last year said they would have liked a Chinese meal, hence the choice of Wongs which is only short walk, and I was going to arrange for a special set menu. Anyway it's going to be too complicated for me to try and work it out to everyone's satisfaction because many places don't take reservations on Friday and Saturday evenings, so I've amended the 1st post to reflect some "less-gourmet" choices where I'll take the visiting group, and everyone is welcome to join us at those venues. Wapping Wharf is a 5min walk from the IBIS and is new development with lots of choices for "grub" so everyone will easily be catered for!
  15. Drivers 1. Signing in for the event starts at 0745hrs at the Strawford Centre, please then get your car noise tested (you will be given a noise test form when you sign in). Please take note of the very strict noise regulations at Combe (100dB @ 4500rpm) - if you turn up and fail the noise test, you will not be allowed out on the circuit until you can dampen it down sufficiently. Raffle tickets will be on sale to all participants when signing in and you can also obtain your lunch voucher at the same time. 2. 

The drivers briefing will commence at 0830hrs sharp. Latecomers may be admitted at the discretion of the Castle Combe staff carrying out the briefing. It is mandatory that all participants attend the briefing as you will not be allowed out on the circuit if you haven’t.

 3. The track opens at 0900hrs and participants will go out in groups behind a pace car, for a fixed number of laps (to be advised at the briefing) at relatively slow speeds in order to learn the circuit and also study the circuit conditions. This is especially important if the circuit is wet. We hope to complete these pace car laps by 0930 afterwhich we intend to go to full open pitlane.

 4. You MUST wear a helmet (before going out on the circuit) and have your arms, legs and feet covered, so no short-sleeved T-shirts, shorts or slippers. You WILL NOT be allowed out unless you comply with this. You also must ensure that your helmet chin-straps are done up before proceeding out on the circuit. Please make sure that towing eyes on the car are fitted and visible - the trackside recovery guys will recover your car by any means they deem fit if it does not have a suitable towing eye.

 5. A fixed number of cars will be allowed out on the circuit at any one time. The rest wishing to get out on the circuit need to queue at the Avon Bridge. For every car which returns to the paddock, a car will be released into the pitlane to join the circuit. When joining the circuit, please remember to keep to the left of the “blend line” before getting on to the racing line (just as in F1). This is especially important at Combe because the pit exit to the circuit also happens to be pretty much just off the racing line through one of the fastests corners of the circuit. Anyone who disobeys this is likely to be black-flagged by the marshals and that’s the end of your day. 6. 

It’s advisable to keep stints out on the circuit to around 10mins as it will be tiring for both car and drivers, and there is plenty of time for everyone to enjoy themselves on the day. It is also advisable to do one “cooling down” lap before returning to the paddock but please be extra aware of those who are still doing “hot” laps and don’t get in their way. 7. If you break down whilst out on the circuit, please slow down and pull off the circuit as quickly as possible and as close to a marshal's post as possible. Please keep your helmet on and exit the vehicle and get across the safety barrier and wait for assistance. Under no circumstance is anyone to attempt to conduct any repairs to their car whilst it is parked anywhere on the circuit. 8. There is no dedicated lunch break but there will be a pizza van on site. In exchange for a lunch voucher, you will get a pizza, plus a soft drink can (Coke or Diet Coke). Drivers and passengers can also get free tea and coffee at the pizza van - please show your wrist band to get those. 9. The circuit closes at 1600hrs. Passengers 1. Anyone over the age of 16yrs can attend the event and sign up to be a passenger for a minimum £20 donation towards the charity fund raising. 2. You do not need to attend the drivers briefing if you sign up as a passenger and you can sign up throughout the day at the reception desk in the Strawford Centre. 3. Once you have signed up, you can have as many passenger rides as you like, and for as long as you like in any of the cars heading out on the circuit as long as the drivers are happy to take you out. 4. As a passenger, you are still required to wear a helmet and have your arms, legs and feet covered, so no short-sleeved T-shirts, shorts or slippers. You WILL NOT be allowed out unless you comply with this. 5. Only 1 driver and 1 passenger, per car, will be allowed out on the circuit at any one time. Cameras No hand-held cameras will be allowed – anyone caught using them will be excluded from the event immediately (both driver and passenger, so its ultimately the driver’s responsibility) All cameras (including screen mounted suction ones) should have a tether so that there is no risk of them falling into the drivers footwell, or flying out of the car should they come off. Cameras can only be mounted inside the car.


This is the single most important thing for all participants to take note of; overtaking is only to take place if all 3 of the following requirements are fulfilled: 1. On the right 2. On the straights 3. With the co-operation and consent of the driver being overtaken The pit-lane entrance at Combe is on the left which is why overtaking must only take place on the right. A "straight" for overtaking must be sufficiently long to carry out the manoeuvre safely before reaching the braking point for the next bend. I don't want to be overly prescriptive about this but please be sensible as there are plenty of overtaking opportunities on the circuit. The instant a driver in front starts braking in preparation for a corner, that is their corner, there is to be no "sneaking" through on the inside or trying to "outbrake" others in the braking zones. The driver you are about to overtake MUST indicate that he / she is aware that you intend to overtake by indicating to the left, pulling over to the left of the circuit and lifting off the the throttle until they have been passed. Drivers who are being overtaken are asked to please comply with the last point of lifting off the throttle as it makes the execution of the overtake much quicker and safer. There are going to be cars in a mixed state of tune and some will be much quicker (even with less power) than others. The definition of a quicker car is one which takes less time to do a full lap of the circuit than you - hence, as a general rule of thumb, if your rear view mirror was clear for a few corners and all of a sudden a car appears in it, they ARE quicker than you so please let them past. If in any doubt, please do not attempt an overtake and wait until the 3 conditions stipulated above are met. These overtaking rules are non-negotiable. If followed strictly, they will make car-car contact virtually impossible, and the entire event safe for everyone, so anyone who does not comply will have their day cut short and be asked to leave the circuit. If anyone feels that someone else is driving in an obstructive / uncooperative or dangerous manner, please immediately pull into the paddock / pit lane and let one of the marshals or me know and we will deal with it. Timing There is strictly to be no timing whatsoever, be that with data loggers, stopwatches or computer / mobile phone based software. Anyone caught timing themselves will be immediately excluded from the event because it becomes classed as a "competitive" event and invalidates the public liability insurance for everyone participating. There is also to be no "testing", e.g. evaluating software calibration changes etc. out on the circuit for any reason.
  16. Official Photographer Fresh Orange Photography will once again be in attendance and will be taking photos both in the paddock and of cars out on track. We are planning to have a group photo taken in the pitlane, straight after the drivers briefing (weather permitting) and they will spend the first hour taking photos of participants around the paddock - please do ask for any specific group photos (with cars and other participants) which you would like. Photos from the day will be on sale at the Strawford Centre. All photos will be uploaded, unedited, to their website for anyone to view and / or buy. 10% of the proceeds from all photograph sales of the event will be donated towards the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charity.
  17. I am pleased to once again open the participant / drivers list for the 2017 track day, which has been booked and confirmed for Friday 30th June. Please take note of the following information which relates to the event: • City Motors Volvo in Bristol have again very kindly agreed to sponsor the event so that we can keep prices as low as possible, and we will have a total of 30 places available for forum members. • The format for the day will be open-pitlane and we will be running the day from 9am straight through to 4pm without any stoppage for a lunch break. • The cost for a drivers place is £180; second driver places are available for an extra £100 for each participant (max 2 drivers per car) but please contact me separately to discuss this. All monies paid for second drivers will go straight into this years’ charity pot. Please note that we will not be able to accept any requests to add anyone on as a second driver after Sunday 26th March 2017. • Once you have signed up, please arrange to send payment across as soon as possible – places cannot be confirmed until payment is received and will be on a first-come-first-served basis. The deadline for receiving payments is Sunday 26th March 2017. As with previous years you can send payment via Paypal or bank transfer, but please do make sure that all transaction fees are covered in doing so, and make it clear whose place the payment is for. If any clarification is required, please do not hesitate to drop me a PM. • This payment is non-refundable but I will do my best to help with a change of circumstances, wherever possible. The event remains entirely non-profit so my primary responsibility is to make sure that I can cover the costs relating to hiring the circuit for the day, to ensure the event can go ahead. All extra fund raising at both the track and open days are being done for a good cause. • We should once again have the pleasure of hosting contingents from both Chippenham Fire Station and Mission Motorsport, as well as a group from Volvo UK, so I will be very grateful if you could please offer all guests who attend as many passenger laps as possible.   19. Nominated Charity The nominated charity for this year is The Great Western Air Ambulance. We will once again have members from Wiltshire Fire Service present with Fire Appliances and they will also be conducting various demonstrations. I can also confirm that we will once again be having the Fire Appliances offering passenger rides out on track.
  20. I for one am absolutely shocked beyond words that no one has brought up THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT question of all about the trip? HOT BREAKFAST!!
  21. Check the terminals on the starter motor and replace if they look dodgy - quite a common issue on P2s which leads to symptoms similar to those you're describing.
  22. For what it's worth, I think there's possibly 2 different issues here which are being conflated - namely the "unlock" and the other being a "reload". The former, which is what I've previously posted on, is a test procedure for Volvo dealers to use, and the TIE report goes on to mention the procedure to "re-code" the ECU to the car once tests are complete, so I do not believe that a dealer will necessarily want to release the ECU in an "unlocked" state. The ECM re-load is a totally separate matter, but I know of several instances where ECMs have crashed during the download, one of my very own spares nearly did a few weeks back. I can, therefore, perhaps understand the reluctance of any dealership which is aware of the risks, to carry that procedure out if ViDA does not identify that there is an existing ECM update for the car.
