Well im sure quite a few of you already know this car so it needs no introduction :)

Ive wanted an 850R for a very long time but sadly its never happened and whenever i had the money and was looking nothing came up other than auto's or manuals that where in poor condition with beige interiors  and when i didnt have the money good example appeared for sale rather annoyingly at the time, Well all is not lost as i spotted Afzals 855R for sale a few weeks back and the timing was perfect.

It was my ideal colour, Manual gearbox and had the black interior so it ticked all the boxes and then it has had a crazy amount of money spent in the last 6 months on uprated or worn items which is pretty much everything id ever want to do to a volvo done and the best part is its all been done properly. So after a few PM's and a chat on the phone the deal was done and saturday the 3rd of july couldnt come fast enough!

I collected the car on the saturday after a decent train journey down from sheffield to Afzals in london and then went onto the Chippenham MRG meet and then finally home covering a trouble free 300 miles at 35mpg and enjoyed every minute of it!

Heres a spec of the car and some pictures to follow...

CAR: 1996 Volvo 850R estate, Manual gearbox, Flame red paintwork with black half leather half alacantara interior, Current milage 144k with a new engine fitted 50k miles ago by Volvo.

Engine/Gearbox: B5234T4 engine, Full stage 0, All brand new genuine ignition components including plugs, HT leads, distibutor cap and rotor arm, New genuine MAF, New genuine BCS, New lambda sensor, New uprated vac pipes, All large boost hoses replaced with silicone items, New gear linkage cables, New genuine expansion tank and cap, New Genuine thermostat and coolant temp sensor.

Td04-18t turbo with bigger angled exhaust housing, 3" ferrita downpipe with sports cat, Ferrita cat-back exhaust, TWR ported throttle body, Uprated 70mm intercooler with RIP courtesty of TWR, Enlarged turbo to MAF pipework, MTE stage 2 remap, Oil catch tank, M56 gearbox with 850R clutch, Polybushed top engine mount, Polybushed gearbox tie bar, Reinforced engine and subframe mounts.

Suspension: FK dampers with 40mm FK lowering springs, Brand new volvo wishbones which have been polybushed, Front and rear IPD anti roll bars, Volvo strut brace.

Brakes: Brand new genuine volvo discs and pads all round with uprgaded 302mm fronts.

Wheels/Tyres: Standard 17" volan alloys with 215/45r17 Kumho ecsta sport tyres.

Interior: Standard apart from Racetech 2bar boost gauge.

Well i do like to drive my cars but i also like to keep them clean too much to the disgust of some neighbours :D and after a well earned rest saturday night i got up bright and early to gave the car a good clean, Theres no before and after pics as im not that anal and wanted to crack on but you get the idea.

The paint is in remarkable condition for its age, There is the odd mark here and there and an imperfection in the bonnet but i can live with that. Heres the cleaning process i used...

Hosed the car, wheels and arches down.
Washed the car using the 2 bucket method 1 panel at a time using a lambswool mitt and zymol shampoo.
Washed the arches using a trigger spay container with APC then a brush to loosen up dirt.
Washed the wheels using a megs microfibre mitt and zymol shampoo.
Clayed the whole car with Megs claybar and Meg nxt gen quick detailer as a lubricant.
Rinsed the car again.
Dryed the car off with an elite care care deep pile drying towel.
Dryed the wheels, door/boot shuts and underbonnet with autoglym chamois.
Cleaned then polised the glass with AG glass polish.
Polished the whole car with AG super resin polish as the roof was a bit pink.
Apllied 1 x coat of collinites no 476 wax.
Dressed all the bumpers, Rubbing strips, Door handles, Mudflaps and roof rails so they look grey again instead of white.
Dressed the tyres with megs endurance tyre gel.
Polished the exhaust trim with autosol.

Only took a few pics but you get the idea....

Future plans with the car i have a few already, Although a hell of alot has been down it never ends does it???

I would like to replace the tyres at some point for something a bit stickier and perhaps change the size for some 215/40r17's. Im going to paint the front grille satin black, When the front pads where down a bit more id like some uprated items with braided hoses and decent 5.1 brake fluid.

I may possibly change the suspension but havnt decided what to go for yet and eventually would like to fit either an M59 box or go all hog and buy and buy a Qeef LSD but we shall see, Other than that im going to enjoy the car.

Thanks for looking and sorry if ive rambled on, If you hadnt guessed im very happy with the car.

Thanks it took a few hours but it will make life much easier for a good while when cleaning the car in the future, I havnt used the 845 yet but once my tin of 456 runs out ill possibly try it then.

As for the MPG when Tim drove the car from his place to london he actually managed 39mpg :o I sat at a steady constant 70-75mph on my way home without using the cruise control and got 300 miles to £50 of fuel :D

With all the new components and breathing mods the car feels so responsive and free-revving, I guess the less restrictions that are in the way the more efficient the car is in that respect.

Very very nice - lots of things done there that I'd like to do to mine at some point. A manual too you lucky bugger  Its something I've been contemplating but can't financially justify really - especially with the missus wanting lots of work done about the house  Still, 35mpg - thats fantastic. The best I've ever seen is 28 and a bit - driving like a vicar through the M1 roadworks! Oh well, maybe some day.

What do you think of the MTE map? Again, something I've been considering lately but don't really want a run down to London unless I absolutely have to. I think I'll have to take my car to Tim to see what he can eek out of it as it is.

Enjoy the car - if you decide you don't like it let me know and I'll help you out and take it off your hands :D

Thanks for that, The 35mpg i got was on a run i am now getting 26-27mpg commuting which still isnt bad IMO.

MTE map is fantastic, After having 3 Rica'd cars in the past the difference is like night and day but it does also have quite a few other mods apart from the remap which will no doubt make a difference also.

The way the car makes the power is pretty impressive, The mid range is brutal and it pulls smoothly right to the redline.

Id personally get all the bolt ons done first then go and see Don in london and get the car mapped to suite, As you know Tim seriously knows his stuff and has worked some magic on my car which clearly shows.

I thought id leave it in just in case but might take it out :)

Yes ive driven it, Its fookin RAW :D

Sounds bonkers and is stupdily responsive now, Turns in alot quicker too but feels a tad lighter on the back end which was to be expected although thankfully the IPD roll bars stop any roll so its all good. Must have removed an easy 100kg from the car, The carpets, The underlay, Roof lining, Everything from the boot, 4 x rear speakers, Rear door cards, Rear seats, Every clip that was visible and various other parts of trim.

Just need to keep an eye out for some decent buckets over the next month or so and possibly some harnesses then i can take another 30kg or so out with the fron seats, Im a very happy bunny.....

Yes some manual regs would be nice in the front and i was discussing it with a friend earlier today, That way i can ditch the armrest and centre console.

On another note i quite like the armrest and electric rears, Ive left the switches connected so i can still operate the rears from the 4 way switch.

Im not sure i want to go much further, Removing the electric sunroof and fitting plasic windows are big weight savers but i still want the car to be livable with as its my daily. I can still drive it comfortably and its not OTT at the moment so its a good compromise :)

You could always fit 2 way window switch and only connect the rears, that way you can have the fronts as manuals and rears as electric.Good for you for being brave enough to strip it this far, don't forget though save the seats and door cards for me please Simon.

Which doorcards do you need tony i thought it was just the front seats you where after? The rears are dead as they took alot of effort to remove :(

I have the rear seats and the fronts are all yours once i get some buckets, Good idea redarding the windows mate!
