Posted 05 November 2007 - 16:40

SO YOU WANT TO UPGRADE YOUR STANDARD SPEC LIGHTS TO THE NEWER 2005 SPEC VERSIONS

WELL HERE`S THE HOW TO FOR V70 2000 UPTO 2004

FIRST WE NEED SOME TOOLS

SOCKET SET WITH VARIOUS SIZES IN METRIC

TORX BIT IN SIZE 25 AND A DRIVER

SMALL FLAT BLADED SCREW DRIVER

FLAT BLADED TOOL (BUTTER KNIFE IS IDEAL)

PAIR OF WIRE STRIPPER / CRIMPERS

CRIMP FITTINGS EITHER BULLET OR SPADE (DOESN`T MATTER WHICH) AS LONG AS YOU HAVE EIGHT OF EACH MALE AND FEMALE FITTINGS

PVC ELECTRICAL INSULATION TAPE (ANY COLOUR)

STEP ONE " FRONT BUMPER REMOVAL "

LIFT UP THE PLASTIC COVERS ON THE HEADLAMP WIPERS AND UNDO THE 8 MM BOLTS THAT SECURE THEM TO THE SPLINES AND PULL OFF THE WIPER ARMS DISCONNECTING THE BLACK RUBBER FLUID HOSES AS YOU DO SO

Posted Image

OPEN THE BONNET IF NOT ALREADY OPEN AND LOCATE THE SIX PLASTIC RIVETS AT THE TOP OF THE SLAM PANEL AND PUSH IN THE CENTRE OF THE RIVET TO DISENGAGE THE CLIPS AND PULL OUT THE RIVETS

Posted Image

USING THE FLAT BLADED TOOL PRISE OFF THE O/S AND N/S OUTER PLASTIC BUMPER TRIMS (START AT THE FRONT AND WORK AROUND TO THE SIDES) THIS IS JUST SECURED BY CLIPS AS SHOWN IN THE PIC

Posted Image

TO UNCOVER THE HOLES FOR THE FRONT BUMPER SECURING BOLTS

Posted Image

UNDO THE TWO 12 MM BOLTS THAT ARE WITHIN THESE HOLES

THEN PROCEED TO THE WHEEL ARCHES AND UNDO THE TWO TORX 25 SCREWS THAT HOLD THE SIDES OF THE BUMPER IN PLACE BUT DO NOT COMPETELY REMOVE THEM (SEE PICS)

Posted Image

Posted Image

NEXT PULL THE BUMPER OFF THE MOUNTINGS AND AS YOU DO SO DISCONNECT THE WIRING MULTI PLUGS FOR THE FRONT FOG LIGHTS (ATTACHED TO THE BUMPER IF NO FOG LIGHTS FITTED)

Posted Image

Posted Image

STEP TWO " EXISTING HEADLIGHT UNIT`S REMOVAL "

UNDO THE TWO 10 MM BOLTS ON THE TOP OF THE SLAM PANEL SECURING THE HEADLIGHT UNITS

Posted Image

THE SINGLE 10 MM BOLTS SECURING THE INSIDE TO THE RADIATOR COWLING

Posted Image

NEXT UNDO AND REMOVE THE SINGLE 10 MM BOLTS AND THE TWO TORX 25 SCREWS SECURING THE BUMPER SIDE RETAINER TO THE FRONT WING ON THE NEARSIDE AND REPEAT FOR THE OFFSIDE

Posted Image

Posted Image

TO UNCOVER THE SIDE SECURING BOLT FOR THE HEADLIGHT UNIT

Posted Image

THE BOLT IS IN THE SAME POSITION ON EITHER SIDE AND YOU JUST BEND THE BUMPER RETAINER DOWNWARDS TO GAIN ACCESS

THEN IT`S JUST A CASE OFF PULLING OUT THE HEADLIGHT UNIT SLIGHTLY AND DISCONNECTING THE WIRING MIULTIPLUGS FOR

1) MAIN HEADLAMP POWER

2) INDIACATOR POWER

3) HEADLAMP HEIGHT ADJUSTER

4) HEADLAMP WASH WIPE POWER

ONCE THEY HAVE ALL BEEN DISCONNECTED WITHDRAW THE UNIT COMPLETE WITH HEADLAMP WIPER MOTOR FROM THE CAR

STEP THREE " MODIFYING THE WIRING LOOMS "

SO NOW THE HEADLIGHT UNIT IS OUT LOCATE THE MULTIPLUG ON THE CAR`S WIRING LOOM THAT SUPPLIED IT WITH POWER IT`S BLACK AND HAS FOUR WIRES GOING INTO IT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT ONE AND THEN CUT OFF THE MULTIPLUG ONE WIRE AT A TIME NOTING WHAT COLOUR WIRE GOES TO WHAT PIN (THERE ARE NUMBERS ON ONE SIDE OF THE MULTIPLUG) SO AS NOT TO CAUSE A SHORT AND BLOW ANY FUSES AND THEN USE WIRE STRIPPERS TO GIVE THE ENDS ABOUT 5 MM OF BARE WIRE AND THEN CRIMP THE TERMINALS OF YOUR CHOICE TO THE ENDS MAKING SURE THEY ARE ALL THE SAME

ON MY V70 THE PIN OUTS ON THE N/S ARE AS FOLLOWS

PIN ONE

FUNCTION NEG EARTH / COMMON RETURN
WIRE COLOUR GREY / BLACK

PIN TWO

FUNCTION SIDE LIGHTS
WIRE COLOUR WHITE

PIN THREE

FUNCTION HEADLIGHT DIPPED BEAM
WIRE COLOUR BLUE / WHITE

PIN FOUR

FUNCTION HEADLIGHT MAINBEAM
WIRE COLOUR BLUE

ON THE O/S THEY ARE

PIN ONE

FUNCTION NEG EARTH / COMMON RETURN
WIRE COLOUR BLACK

PIN TWO

FUNCTION SIDE LIGHT
WIRE COLOUR GREY

PIN THREE

FUCTION HEADLIGHT DIPPED BEAM
WIRE COLOUR BLUE / YELLOW

PIN FOUR

FUNCTION HEADLIGHT MAIN BEAM
WIRE COLOR WHITE

DO NOT MODIFY ANY OF THE OTHER MULTIPLUGS AS WE NEED THEM INTACT ON THE CAR`S ORIGINAL WIRING LOOM

THEN IT`S ONTO THE NEW HEADLIGHT UNIT`S WIRING LOOM

CUT OFF ALL THE RUBBER TUBEING TO EXPOSE ALL THE WIRES

THEN CUT OFF OF LARGE SQUARE SHAPED MULTIPLUG CONNECTOR AT THE VERY END OF THE LOOM (THIS IS THE CONNECTOR WHICH WOULD PLUG INTO THE LOOM ON A 2005 V70 ONWARDS)

THEN WORKING THROUGH THE MASS OF WIRES LOCATE THE TWO WIRES THAT GO TO THE MARKER LIGHT ONE SHOULD BE YELLOW AND THE OTHER WILL BE EITHER BLACK OR PURPLE DEPENDING ON THE AGE OF YOUR NEW LOOM AND CUT THE YELLOW WIRE SO YOU HAVE A SINGLE LENGTH COMING FROM THE MARKER LIGHT WITH NO OTHER WIRES SPLICED TO IT

TRACE THE OTHER WIRE WHICH IS EITHER BLACK OR PURPLE THIS WIRE SHOULD SPLICE INTO A WIRE OF THE SAME COLOUR AND THE SPLICED END SHOULD GO INTO THE MAIN ROUND MULTIPLUG THAT CONNECTS TO THE HEADLIGHT UNIT CUT THIS WIRE ABOVE THE SPLICE AS YOU NEED TO KEEP THAT CONNECTION BUT DON`T CUT IT TOO SHORT

YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE A YELLOW WIRE AND A BLACK OR PURPLE WIRE FROM THE MARKER LIGHT

NEXT WE NEED TO LOCATE THE OTHER WIRES WE WILL NEED ALL THESE COME OUT OF THE MAIN ROUND MULTIPLUG

LOCATE THE YELLOW WIRE AND CUT THIS AS FAR UP AS YOU CAN BUT REMOVE ANY SPLICED IN WIRES SO IT IS A SINGLE LENGTH OF ABOUT 4 INCHES

LOCATE THE GREY WIRE AND DO THE SAME LEAVING ABOUT 4 INCHES

LOCATE THE RED WIRE AND AGAIN CUT IT LEAVING ABOUT 4 INCHES

ALL THE ABOVE WIRE MUST BE SINGLE WITH NO SPLICES

STRIP THE INSULATION FROM THEM ALL ABOUT 5 MM IS ENOUGH AND FIT CRIMP TERMINALS TO THE ENDS OF THE BLACK / PURPLE , RED AND GREY WIRES REMEMBERING TO FIT THE OPPOSITE FITTING TO THOSE FITTED TO THE ORIGINAL LOOM IN THE CAR

THE YELLOW WIRE NEEDS TO BE SPLICED WITH THE YELLOW WIRE COMING FROM THE MARKER LIGHT THEN FIT A CRIMP TERMINAL TO THE END OF THE WIRE

ONCE YOU HAVE FITTED ALL THE CRIMP TERMINALS TAPE UP THE MARKER LIGHT WIRES AND PUSH THE NEWLY FORMED LOOM INTO IT`S RETAINING LUGS ON THE NEW HEADLAMP UNIT AND PUSH AND TWIST THE MARKER LIGHT FITTING INTO THE HOUSING

CUT ALL OTHER WIRES ABOUT 3 INCHES FROM THE MULTIPLUG AND SEAL THEM WITH TAPE THEN BIND THEM ALL TOGETHER TO FORM A SMALL BUNDLE AS NON OF THESE WIRES ARE NEEDED THE MULTIPLUGS ON THE NEW LOOM ARE NOT NEEDED EITHER SO CAN BE DISCARDED

THEN OFFER THE HEADLIGHT UPTO IT`S APATURE AND CONNECT THE WIRES FROM THE NEW LOOM TO THE CARS EXISTING LOOM

ON THE OFF SIDE CONNECT THE FOLOWING

YELLOW WIRES TO PIN ONE WIRES ON ORIGINAL LOOM

BLACK OR PURPLE WIRE TO PIN TWO WIRE ON ORIGINAL LOOM

GREY WIRE TO PIN THREE WIRE ON ORIGINAL LOOM

RED WIRE TO PIN FOUR WIRE ON ORIGINAL LOOM

ON THE NEARSIDE CONNECT THE FOLLOWING

YELLOW WIRES TO PIN ONE WIRE ON THE ORIGINAL LOOM

BLACK OR PURPLE WIRE TO PIN TWO WIRE ON THE ORIGINAL LOOM

GREY WIRE TO PIN THREE WIRE ON THE ORIGINAL LOOM

RED WIRE TO PIN FOUR WIRE ON THE ORIGINAL LOOM

STEP FOUR " CHECK THAT IT ALL WORKS "

SO NOW YOUR HEADLIGHTS ARE CONNECTED PROCEED TO FIT THEM MAKING SURE YOU PLUG IN THE MULTIPLUGS FOR THE INDIACATORS AND HEADLIGHT HEIGHT ADJUSTERS (THANKS VOLVO AT LEAST THESE ARE THE SAME) ONTO THEIR CONNECTIONS ON THE NEW UNITS THEN BEFORE YOU BOLT EVERYTHING BACK UP DON`T FORGET TO TAPE UP THE WIRES WHERE THEY ARE CONNECTED TO STOP WATER INGRESS AND MAKE IT LOOK A MORE PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION

START THE CAR ENSURING NO TOOLS ARE LEFT IN THE ENGINE BAY AND CHECK THAT THE LIGHTS OPERATE AS THEY SHOULD AND THAT THE MARKER LIGHTS ARE WORKING WHEN LIGHTS ARE ON

CHECK INDIACATORS ARE FUNCTIONING BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT AND THAT THE HEADLAMP AIM ADJUSTER MOVES THE REFLECTORS CORRECTLY (YOU MAY NEED TO MANUALLY ADJUST THE AIM TO GET IT RIGHT OR TAKE IT TO A GARAGE TO HAVE THEM CHECKED AND ALIGNED)

THEN IF IT`S ALL WORKING OK PROCEED TO REFIT ALL PARTS REMOVED DURING THEIR FITTING

AND YOU SHOULD END UP WITH THESE RATHER PRETTY LOOKING LIGHTS

I`LL ADD A FEW PICS OF THEM AT NIGHT LATER

Posted Image

Posted Image

NOTE THE LACK OF HEADLAMP WIPERS THIS IS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT BE FITTED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE NEW HEADLIGHT UNITS AS A HIGH PRESSURE JET WASH SYSTEM IS USED ON THE NEWER MODELS INSTEAD

(THIS UPGRADE TO FOLLOW)

Hi mate

The washer lines are cable tied to the washer bottle and the ends bent double and held with a hose clamp to stop screen wash escaping

As for the loom that looks good mate i might even redo mine and use a couple of those myself so cheers for the link

Oh and one thing to be aware of the headlight height adjuster switch on the dash will work in reverse on these lights so setting at 0 will have the lights pointing at the sky

Cheers

I'm going to go down that route too if I come across the parts.

That and colour code the remaining bump strips.

I pulled all the strips off both bumpers and all the doors and sent em away to a mate of my bro`s who`s a professional sprayer

He cleaned em all up and smoothed em down b4 painting so they are silky smooth and clear coated ontop to give the shine

The front bumper i did myself and boy does it show i`m gonna have the new one done pro so it blends well and probs get the other bits done at same time

If you feel up to it have a go but just remember those three imortal words

Preperation , preperation and preperation and you should do a good job mine was a bit rushed

Cheers
