mate, its the best job but can be a bit stressful when u have a tit (student) behind the wheel doin 155 in lane 3, not payin attention to other vhs in lanes 1 and 2. We drive unmarked cars until week 5 so people dont think we are the police just think we are tits travelling at silly speeds using only head lights to get cars out of our way. is the best course to ever go on. We have to keep to the speed limit in RED circle zone but once out of them we have to make max safe  progress which means not missing any over take that are on. If we do that's a mark down only allowed 13 marks down on week 4 test and 6 on week 5 test. Can be anythin from not checking mirrors, gear/brake over lap, braking then changin gear then braking again because u've not planned the braking quick enough first time-wrong road positioning- using indicators when there is no one to indicate to-using, not getin into gthe overtake position when coming out of a bend. the list of error is massive.The pass rate is 4 in 10. We have do drive to somethin call the system of car control (Information-position-speed-gear-acceleration) that system has to be verbally and visibly displayed at every hazard (parked car-junctions-bends-roundabouts-everythin u can think of

Traffic light question, doesn't matter if u don't know the road this rule, any many more applies to every road;

If u were travellin down say the A49 towards the traffic light junction on gthe A54 at 1am in the morning when the roads are empty lest say. ON which road will the RED be fixed on and why?

Obviously the answer is the road you're travelling on (A49 in this case), why; Sod's Law!!!!

But seriously, that post sounded really interesting were it not for the fact that it reads as if you were typing it whilst hanging out of the window following the said student at 155!!!! :D

Roadcraft the Police Drivers Handbook - Good informative read for the theory.
Ultimate Driving Craft 1 - Chris Gilbert Spent 22 years teaching High Speed Advanced/Pursuit Driving at the MET Driving School at Hendon. Very good at seeing how to put the theory into practice and includes a blue light run.

Be good to meet up Philip and have a chin wag sometime. I was due to start my training with Thames Valley last June after just over 2 years in the application process, sadly it was not to be. My career progression would have been into traffic, being a petrolhead where else would it go :lol:.

If I'm in the S60R then your welcome to a drive although you might end up wanting more from the work cars in all areas after driving that.

Mate,

I'd love to meet up some time and have a chin wag. Always wanted to drive an R!!!

I take it ur application has been shelved due to the current funding crisis?

The fastest way into the Police now, which was first trialed by the MET, is by joining the Special Constabulary. The MET are training the Specials to the same standards as us and after 2 years offering, the good candidates a job. This method seems to be dripping through to other forces. Its a way to train prospective cops on the cheap. They are also looking at allowing them onto the the standard ( 3 week) driving course at no cost to the student other then their time.

The Roadcraft hand book is a the Police drivers bible. If u can get ur hands on one of  Chris Gilbert dvd's u'll find it very informative. It may also assist in your everyday driving.
