Apparently so, yes. Although this is my second 9000 and I've never had any issues to date. The ones who are having gearbox issues tend to be the ones with 350+ bhp. Although many with almost 400 bhp are still on their original box. It's the weakest part of the 9000 though, but even a complete rebuild isn't big £££'s.

The B234 engine is strong though - much stronger than the 9-5's 2.3. It's easily as strong as the 2.3 Volvo lump, if not stronger, and is apparently capable of close to 500 bhp without any internal mods.

All in all, a very strong car bar the gearbox (and even that isn't *that* much of a problem). It feels like it's carved out of a solid block of steel.

nice looking saab mate a family member of mine has just sold his 9000 mintareo lol just had to say it lol anyway his gearbox didnt last to long so he spent 250quid for 101 box about 2 days later the engine blew up lol your find if anything goes wrong it will take the tip of number 3 plug and do the piston rings at the same time this is the second saab he has had and both done the same thing so beware lol i know the ins and outs of 9000 areos now lol good luck with the old girl nice clean looking motor :)

Nice saab, used to be a saab nut in the early nineties.
Used to have a red 1988 900 turbo T16S airflow, the same as a carlson but with a boot instead of the horrible hatch and rear end.
Have been looking for many years and have never seen one the same and if i found one i would sell the 850R.
Had a remap and lots of abbotts parts and if i remember right was just over 270bhp.
Used to have fun blasting cosworths at the time.
Its still on dvla but was taxed 1 year after i sold it and not since so probably scrapped.

I was a member of the scary saab owners club and they used to have a book that listed member and services they would provide from helping with repairs to popping round for a cuppa!
One strange thing was my 850R used to carry the number plate abbotts but don't know if its connected.
Stuck in the mid nineties!

Tried a 9-5 Aero..2006 55 Reg before I bought my Jag X 3.0 AUTO. Saab was very nice and very quick but the quality didn't match the Jag's. Performance was slightly better...but, surprisingly, not a huge amount..mid-range..Yes!  The Jag was AWD and just floor it and listen to the engine! Lovely. The Jag interior was beautiful as well. Had the estate same size as the Saab. The other off-putting thing was the steering wheel was nasty in the Saab!
I do know the 9000 and 900 before that were actually far better built and are the classic Saab's!
Bit like the 850/V70 P1 AND 2 against the current Volvo stock.....apparently!!

The classics every time :D
