My daughter was dropping a friend off when a police car stopped behind her. The police woman said they had a complaint about noise coming from car (she had been stopped for 30 seconds) She was then asked for her insurance docments and said they were at home. She was told "you must keep your documents in the car". On the back of my certificate it states > this is legal document and must be kept in a safe place not in the car< It makes you wonder.

If the Police car was fitted with ANPR cameras, this should not have happened. It shows all the info from the database, ie:tax, insurance & MOT, etc.

Sounds like they wanted an easy 'Pull'.

Either that or they were just bored & looking for 'Brownie Points'.

Unless she had her 'Stereo' Too loud.

The law states that you must be able to produce all the relevant documents at the time of the stop. However, if this is not done, the driver will be reported for failing to produce but no action will be taken if they are produced within seven days at a Police station. The driver is then issued with a HO/RT1 slip to produce those documents.
The HO/rt1 does not have to be issued as a verbal request is sufficient but, obviously, the form makes admin matters easier as all the relevant details are included for the officer taking the production.
Sorry that was a bit long winded, but I was getting bored waiting for the F1 qualifying.

But surely all they need to do is run a check with the data base and not have to waste people's time and go through the whole process of paper work and going to your local office to produce documents?

Doesn't always work unfortunately. I recently put my car on a cherished transfer and it didn't appear on the MID for three days. There is also the problem of people cancelling or not paying.
Thank Simon by the way for his recent help.
