As promised, I've calculated what I'm getting based on the last tank. Big lies from the OBC...you're not kidding! The computer displayed 54.9 MPG average over 685 miles. After I'd done the sums (and yes, I did use imperial gallons!) it came out at pretty much exactly 46 MPG. Quite a margin of error!

Two things spring to mind. Firstly, this was an unusual tankful, in that it was almost all local driving, which saw me down around 50 MPG on the computer. The final 150 miles or so were on motorways, which bumped the figures from the OBC significantly towards the end of the tank. I'd be interested to see if I see the same error with a more normal tankful.

Secondly, whatever the numbers actually are, it's still more or less halving my fuel bill over the V70R, which was the goal. Presumably the R was similarly lying to me! I'm routinely doubling the mileage I get to a tank over the R, and the tank only appears to be about 10% larger on the D5.

Back in the day (2005-2007), I reckoned I could get 100 miles of motoring to £10 of petrol in the 340 1.4 I was using as a daily driver. I was hoping to achieve that landmark (which I calculated at the time was roughly 50 MPG) with the D5, but I think the rise in fuel costs has put the kibosh on that one!

The "service" message is now being displayed, so I need to schedule that in ASAP.

cheers

James

The OBC in the D5 is typically arond 21/22 round town, very much stop /start and cold running, i get up over 30 on the mortorway..I daren't actually do the math of a fill to fill

Yeah, I did it right. Maybe the E4 cars are more accurate?

The mileage figure (per tank) is pretty consistent, to be fair. It just looks like the computer doesn't calculate as accurately as it should. If your driving is more 'urban', it might be more accurate in those conditions than on the motorway?

The last time I did a proper check was over a 2000 mile (1999.7 to be exact)  run to the Alps and back. IIRC the obc showed 44mpg but I worked out at 40mpg.

I should hope so. To get down to the low 30's I'd have to drive on an autobahn :whistling:

Don't let your age define you. It's a number, that's all.

Nasty D5 dieseasel with few twiddly bits from TWR, MTE, IPD and Eibach but 600 miles to a tank ain't to be sniffed at :-)

I appear to have defected to the dark side. Posted Image It's a 2005 (05) D5 'S', but with lots of options...leather, family pack, comms pack, bi-xenons, sat nav....so it's more like an SE without electric seats. It's one of the very last of the Euro 3 cars. It's done 200k miles, but it's very clean, and it was half the price it would have been with 100-120k on the clock.

It's a bit slow compared with the R, although surprisingly fast up to 40mph or so, and pulls well in 5th. The midrange (40-70) is a bit weak, and I'll be interested to have a ride in another one to see if it's 'right' or not. I suspect it's fine, and I'm just suffering from R withdrawal symptoms. A thorough cleaning of the EGR valve is on the cards. If this is all it has to give, I suspect a remap is in my future. My friend's remapped S60 E3 is just as quick as my V70R, and it also boosted fuel economy. Speaking of which...an overall average of 55-60mpg seems to be what I'm looking at. Very pleased with that.

Posted Image

Overall...I'm very impressed. It feels more 'solid' than the P1, although not as characterful or sporty. It's marginally quieter, and the stereo is better (despite the R having an external power amp, etc). There are a few niggles to sort out, but so far, I'm happy! It's only my daily driver, and I have other cars for petrolhead kicks. The extra £150-300 a month in my back pocket is well worth giving up a bit of a shove in the back for.

Speaking of which....anyone want to buy a V70R....? Posted Image

cheers

James
