I had a feeling it was a Merlin. I've read about that car before somewhere! Would have loved to hear and see it in action!

Hi

My self, Tim Williams, Black Beast, PaulsT5 Estate, EddyP & Ross where there Tim's was parked 2 down from from the V8 Escort's
That SD1 Was a steaming pile of Shit and about as interesting as fresh dog turd in in a green leaf salad & Charlie The Owner was even Worse LOL!
The show was poorly organised in terms of entertainment but the public who turned up made the day!

Cheers Greg

I disagree entirely, I think it's a fantastic car - Anyone who manages to shoe-horn a Merlin into a car deserves a medal. Don't let the owner ruin the car.

I remember reading about this from years ago though, so it may well be the current owner didn't build the car at all.

It was clever to do! it its not been done in an SD1 before! but it has in other cars with that Engine I think Jay Leno Bought 2 of them over the years, look up his Tank car!
If you go look closely you may change your mind, after standing next to it for a while and looking at all the dangerous and dodgy bits all over the car, it's a piss poor effort at a tank car!

Great British Engineering is supposed to look Good, Solid and make you proud! this did not! These guys where from the Practical Performance Magazine and they did not between them have a single practical working performance car lol

If Tim Williams had built my 850 in this manner I might t have shot him & buried him next to the late great RTPosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Indeed... the Spitfire it was attached to!!!

You mean of course, the supercharger was rather AWoL, and for all of its 27 litres, in standard trim it only pumped out some 600bhp!!!! Should've had Tim have a look at it, clearly they were doing something wrong!

A Merlin with the supercharger removed is still a Merlin, and a Merlin engine in a car is still a beast, even if it is 'only' 600 bhp.

620 bhp at 2550 RPM equates to 1276.9 ft lbs of torque. That's just monstrous. :D

There is a 55 Chevy BelAir in the states with a fully supercharged Merlin if I recall correctly, there are a few vids on YouTube. Something like 3000 bhp and unimaginable torque. It's done to a much higher standard than the SD1.

I'm in work at the moment otherwise I'd post a few links, well worth a look though.

It is a Meteor...it's the non-supercharged tank-based version of the Merlin - http://en.wikipedia....ls-Royce_Meteor

Charlie who built the SD1 is supposed to be a nice bloke...perhaps you caught him on a bad day? I haven't examined the car in great detail, but I imagine he didn't have much energy left over for tidying after shoehorning that thing in. I know practical is in the name of the event, but the SD1 is bonkers, and never fails to draw a crowd. I've long maintained that a car can be "crap" / flawed / useless and still be hilarious fun and priceless to the owner / builder.

cheers

James

We established that James, do keep up :P.

I agree with you entirely though, even if it is a bit rough, he owns a Merlin powered car. Few people can say that.

Imagine listening to that every morning on the way to work :P

It would be interesting to know what sort of speed it can reach at Bruntingthorpe with 27 ltr's, I did one run not using the full length of the straight two up and lifted off at 170MPH on the GPS.
