Had to chuckle (on the one hand) but support them (on the other) this morning and this evening as I travelled through a village in the middle of nowhere on my regular drive to the office - there were a bunch of folk in hi-vis jackets etc with clipboards and speed gun mockups trying to appear to 'get' passing motorists!

Not me I hasten to add, I strictly obey 30mph limits, but it did make me wonder if what they're doing could potentially be dodgy insofar as they're masquerading as 'Police Officers' when they're not ?

Or is some mobile 'safety camera' work sub-contracted out to civi-street these days ?

Could be a camera partnership like they do in Dorset.

In our area its a bunch of sour faced WI's doing their thing by recording plates of speeding motorists.  I have been known to wave at them with a single finger as I pass   Posted Image   Can't help thinking they all need a good lay and a hobby.

should anything come wouldnt it require a sworn statement saying the reg and the speed recorded as well as stating the equipment was operating and being used correctly?

now obviously (cough cough) such a statement from a fine upstanding (cough COUGH) member of the police force is unquestionable, but surely in as case like this it would be your word against theres and it would never go anywhere??

Was it in Tollerton or Radcliffe by any chance?

Will have been a bunch of sour faced old biddies with a speed gun, anyone they catch speeding gets sent a snotty letter from Notts Police saying they wont prosecute you this time blah blah blah with a load of other anti-speeding propaganda thrown into the mix.
The reason they don't prosecute is because they can't, would be thrown out of court in a heartbeat as their evidence is not admissable in court

Round our way we have similar bunch of busy bodies, who sit in hi vis vests, and record number plates/speed etc, apparently best they can do is get police to send you a letter, effectively giving you a telling off, as nothing they say or do can actually be used in prosecution,  beyond possibly having marker put on car,

The biggest problem we have round our way is lorries, and interfering busybodies have made problem worse, as they got council to put limit on number of lorries journeys company can do with their lorries each day, so they just get contractors from other companies to collect whatever doesn't fit on their quota of lorries, its not the company lorries that cause the problem, as their drivers know that complaints = trouble, whereas other contractors and agency drivers in the main don't give a toss, often taking out lamp posts/street furniture/ power lines as they go

Funny, I was going through Wymondham on Sunday on my way to the Peaks, yes these types have been popping up all over the place these last couple of years, last week I was clocked twice by the same group of numpties who set up in equally pointless locations with an LED sign displaying your speed which they photograph and THEN photograph the car as it passes so unless you blatently floor it past them at no point does the car appear in shot with the speed on the sign

I have seen a few of the err older generation doing this sorta thing near me, They take notes and record the cars that look like they are going fast or sound it, occasionally they have got a speed gun on loan ( I think from local Police) to measure motorists. Although I think they cannot give out endorsments but if they report you to the Police you get a letter through warning of your speed?

Is the motorist able to appeal the warning and ask for confirmation the the (busy bodies) have had full training and that the unit has been fully tested and calibrated in accordance to the guidelines, the users themselves have been properley trained?

Just a thought...

The warning is meaningless so there's no point in appealing. It's because these people aren't properly trained that their "evidence" can't be admissible in court so prosecution isn't possible

I remember these folks being on the news months ago - h'apparently all they want to do is get people to slow down etc,
I live right on a main road and occasionally get the odd nutcase driving by well over the 40 limit (70-80 in some cases), most of the time it's the nutcases that work at the local high security nuthouse - quite fitting really lol (though I think they should be given a bed for the night imho).

Anyone seen the two wheeled menaces using peddle power impersonating plod? They wear high vis vests/jackets with the word Polite emblazoned on a blue background... hmm polite what? Most like to tell you to f-off as you point out that red lights mean stop and you would like your wing mirror putting back.

If you google 'polite cycle vest' lots comes up..

FWIW, I think you may well just get stick on for wearing one of those!

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair
