Well I took my 55 plate transit in for MOT last Monday it pased with 42,470 miles on the clock with an advisory of a bit of welding on the near side sill. I booked it in for this work yesterday & my local garage picked up my van at 9.30. Dropped it back at 5.30 with the job done

Got in my van this morning & the recorded mileage is 142,585 miles :(

They had the van for 8 hours that equals 12,500 miles an hour. I have only got 90 out of it down hill.

They must have used 3,400 gallons of fuel with an average of 28 mpg cus it's loaded with all my kit.

Any body got any ideas how this happened ? My van has been devalued over night.

Is it legal to clock my mileage to what it has actually done (can it be done)

Took it back to the garage to be told "never seen that before"

What should I do?

depends if it's a mechanical or digital one i guess. if it's digital, new set of clocks and tap in the original mileage. Sure it's the same van?!

indeed do you have info to back up the 44k from new?

it may be that they have reset the ecu and its now showing its true mileage or they may have fiddled with something they wernt supposed to and f**ked up

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM!

My thoughts exactly, if it's not an honest electrical problem. I don't get it though, it's not french or italian so electrics should be fine :D

Quick update

It's an electronic gauge. They mig welded the sill without disconnecting the battery. I can only assume the voltage pulsed the mileage up. I have just had a phone call to say that they want the van back for a day so someone can come in to wind the 100,000 miles off. I have proof on mileage as it was MOT'ed last Monday.

That's another day I can't earn anything. Oh well paperwork day on Thursday this week :(

Just as i was going to say, its a high voltage spike.....

also worth checking the rest of the electrics, sometimes these spikes can fry the ECU or control moduals..... get a letter from the garage stating what work had been done and what the fault was which the caused. As if issues now start to arise with ecu issues, it may well be due to what they did.

It could be that the millage had be wond back over the years prior to your ownership and a reset is now showing the correct millage (seem to see a lot of this now)

I think the first owner is to blamePosted Image

The garage should be able to get it back to what it should be withthe help of a mobile scam airtist.

I once drove a transit from the south of france, Niece, back to Norfolk in 16 1/2 hours and parked it on my bosses lawn! We used to have toll cards then made out to him so all the speeding fines on the toll roads went on his card! LOL
I never worked for him again! lol Now That was a fast transit!

It's all fixed. No thanks to the garage. They bought it back last night and said they had the clocks out, the auto electrician played about with it nearly all day. Said there was not the extra 100,000 miles in the memory so could not remove what was not there. :(

So thinking about the problem I disconnected the battery, had a cup of coffee, connected the battery again and the fictitious 1 turned into a 0.

The mileage is back to the genuine recorded mileage of 42,700

Apparently it was a "0" all the time but the voltage spike made the top, bottom and right hand side of the "0" disappear making it look like a 1.

Alls well again

Surely the auto electrician disconnected the battery before pulling the clocks out?

You need to get the garage to sort it out.

If they won't, ask your Daughter.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair

I know for a fact that she can't repair transits. She doesn't even like washing up in case she breaks a nail ;)
