Fook knows how that works and it will probably break down but 376bhp/545lb torque, 165g of CO2, combined 44.8mpg and 0-60 in 4.7s in a five series X-Drive.

Amazingly impressive from a diesel, yep still idles like a tractor and doesn't rev, but thinking back to what diesels were like years ago, you wouldn't have thought they could develop quite so much.

Still fookin uncomfortable though

Given the way diesel prices are rising, differential to petrol now heading towards 10p litre and suppliers supposidely struggling with demand they might start looking at developing lean burn petrols.
Most of the tech filters over from trucks for the diesels so I doubt it.

Yes - its interesting to see stuff like stop start technology coming onto mainstream petrol engines. I'm sure there is far more that they could do to make petrol engines more efficent.

Interestingly, my Saab 9000 Aero had amazing mpg compared to the Volvo - 40mpg on the motorway was fairly easy to achieve. So, if they could do that 16 years ago, they should be capable of better now.

I would like / hate to see the service and repair costs for that if (when) it goes wrong Posted Image

I remember seeing the prices Williams BMW charged my old firm for a relatively "simple" 320d when I had to put up with them as a company skip. 18,000 miles and pop, off went the turbo on the first one Posted Image

Don't let your age define you. It's a number, that's all.

Nasty D5 dieseasel with few twiddly bits from TWR, MTE, IPD and Eibach but 600 miles to a tank ain't to be sniffed at :-)

IIRC, they'd made amazing inroads into the Lean Burn technology - Then somebody decided everything HAD to have a Catalytic Converter - Not compatible with Lean Burn for numerous reasons apparently.

Ford did, but they were not the greatest engines.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a massive BMW fan (I do like some of their cars though), but they seem to be leading the market on performance with economy, both on petrol and diesels.

They recon in short term difference in price between Petrol and diesel will grow, as when most refineries were built, there was little demand for diesel and everyone wanted petrol, petrol refineries cant be converted to diesel, so lots of diesel is imported, and petrol refineries have excess capacity, possibly why coryton refinery has gone into administration

seems amazing that something like a petrol refinery can make a loss of 400 odd million quid :o
