My cousin thinks he may have bent a rod on his Cupra R as he has a constant tapping from his engine after some spirited driving last night.

Coincidently he also did an oil change yesterday. He did the change, started it, no noise at all. Drove it and was fine. After a duel carriageway full boost sesh he says it began tapping. He is worried as on his map he running on the torque limit of the standard rods. They tend to bend between 300 - 350lb/ft and his is 290lb/ft with very fast spool. Spikes to 24psi then tails off to 20 at redline using standard BCS.

I asked if he had put in thinner oil than before but he used 5W/40 fully syth as recommended to him on his forum.
I said to try some some thicker oil first and go from there.

Will a compression test diagnose a bent rod as I will do it for him if it will help? Although if the rod is bent, it will be lower in the bore at TDC but it will also be lower than the others at BDC so would the compression stay the same?

Advice appreciated. Thanks, Mitch.
T4' s are better than T5's. Whoops...Did I just say that?

Can't help with the bent rod diagnosis, but I had a Cupra R, brilliant cars. I put a pipewerx 3" DP, 100 cel cat, Milltek cat-back, other bits and an R-tech map. It made 265bhp with about 265ft.lbs torque, which was well below the 300 ft.lbs limit I remember reading about at the time. Mine hit 21 PSI and fell back to about 18PSI. I specifically had it mapped this way as I thought 24PSI was too high for a standard engine........

Saw one today on Oxford Street in red and thought it looked bloody gorgeous. Wouldn't say no to another.........................

He took me out in his, a very very quick motor. 256bhp/ 290lb/ft, not massively impressive on paper but it puts the power down so well. It hardly wheelspins at all. I think the chassis is pretty sorted as standard TBH. Great cars.

The weird thing is that when I had it at the time, I thought it was the quickest thing ever. I can't believe the T4 has 100+bhp & 100+ ft.lbs torque on it :s

Your T4 is one seriously rapid machine. I'll be happy if I eventually get over 300 let alone 370!. Can't afford to map mine for a while as I need to pay for my hol by end of March, I sort of overlooked this £1600 bill.......(or ignored it to buy bits for the T4) haha

I had 265bhp/279lb torque in my Cupra R engined Elise. Ran 25psi all day long so I doubt that's your problem as the BAM coded engines are one of the stronger 20v lumps.

You just get used to power/performance but equally you can also do without it.
