Basically can a truck engine be used in a pick up truck? Now I know it may seem pointless etc but could you mate it to a 5speed of some sort and remap the ecu to take the limiter off?
It's daft I know but I have always wondered if it could be done within a budget as such.
Just thinking put it into a hilux and make it a monster truck lmao.

Have to be a small truck engine, 7.5t one around the 4-6 litre mark but even then you talking a large engine. They only rev to around 2.5-3k rpm at the most.
You certainly wouldn't get the one out of my truck in there . 12 litre might be a little heavy and large plus only revs to 2k rpm.
As for the limiter, the older trucks were mechanical limiters run off the gearbox with a mechanical diesel pump. Since your on a budget that would be where to start.
Very easy to bypass the limiter, you just remove the cable from the pump that operates where the set speed it reached to pull the pump back.

I'd say you're going to need the box out of the 7 and a half too, otherwise the ratios are going to be all wrong. Most are 5 or 6 speed anyway.

On the other hand, I suppose you could go with a ridiculous final drive but it'd have to be bloody strong.

Is there no way of upping the rev limiter to about 5.5k? It's all theory lol but its just something that I've always thought of as daft as it sounds. Also with said engines what are the power bhp + torque + mpg say if it was only dragging itself and bwt 1.5tonnes?

A 7.5t engine and box would flatten a hilux, go with a big V8 chevy engine like the yanks use

Alan's nailed it, too big and heavy so bit academic but.
No you couldn't rev it that high you'd have to do it with ratios. The smaller ones will rev to 3k or slightly more.
Bear in mind the only reason your not passed at 75-80 mph on the motorway by fully laden 44t attics is the limiters.
Before 7.5t vehicle were limited I can remember passing vehicles in the outside lane.

The engine are designed for torque to pull loads along not power for top speed. The 11 litre in my truck only develops 440hp but well in excess of 2000nM of torque. With an aerodynamic load, unlike the pallets I haul, you expect in excess of 10mpg. I believe supermarkets aim for around 10.5mpg overall.

and probably tell all their drivers that less than 20MPG is due to poor driving style, and have a target set of 25MPG

Our target was 27.5 MPG for the 3 and a halfs, so that really wouldn't surprise me :P
