i've tried and failed many many times. been smoking since 14 or 15 and now 40!

tried reading allen carrs book (very good), no joy. tried patches and enjoyed the double dose of whatever i was getting from the patches and a cigarette Posted Image

phoned the doctors up but they're shite, this was before christmas and was told to phone after the 3rd week of jan. now been told that the nurse is on holiday Posted Image

i'm basically a hardcore smoker but do truly want to give up for many different reasons. had one at 5.30pm yesterday and thought fuck it, no more. just succumbed to one 5 mins ago.

i've heard about some drug that a doctor prescribes where it makes you feel ill if you do smoke? zybax maybe?

fed up of smoking tbh, it's as if you're only living for your next smoke. need to and want to give up! Posted Image

gave up about 6 years ago after many failed attempts, used patches for 2 weeks but had realy bad dreams while i was on them, then just ended up going without, wasn't easy as the wife still smoked. its all down to will power and keeping busy, changing your usual routine a bit so you dont think about sparking up so much. saying all that i still get a craving for a No1 every now n then.

Throw all of your cigarettes/lighters/matches away and stop smoking. It can't be that difficult.

Every time you have a fag put it out on your face. You'll soon stop.

Seriously though it is very hard and most of my friends who have stopped have just decided to. The only one I know who couldn't chewed loads of chewing gum instead, normal not nicotine.

Its is difficult to give up I am afraid!!!!!
I have been trying to quite for years, it's like being in a room with naked playboy Girls and not wanting to rag them rotten all night!

Irf the drug your after is pronounced Shampegs I think? i know of a few hard core smokers who have taken it, and i have seen a few lose the plot as well it alters the mind in a big way so you will have to remain calm at all time's or you will flip out!
But on the plus side I have seen people like you manage to stop on them!

Or try asking your self how you would feel if your kids started smoking as they have seen there dad smoke? that is some time's a good one to ask your self as well every time you go to have a cigaret!

Good luck Irf

if i gave up i could pretty much do as many trackdays as i could get to!

5 year old son pisses me off, i never smoke directly in front of him but he knows i smoke and wants to be like feckin daddy!

thats it greg, champix i think it is. i actually had a dream last night that i was giving up but had smoked one cigarette and was saying to muself in the dream to stop ffs!

its either as adam suggests, putting the cigarette out on my face or down to willpower. i'll have to try bothPosted Image

okay, does this make any sense.

i'm one of those who sticks a cig in my mouth for no reason, when i wake up for work at stupid o clock i'll have 3 before i even leave home!

i'm thinking that if i break the habit of relying on one pretty much each and every hour but at the same time i restrict myself to one or two a day that'll give me the satisfaction of knowing i can have one but break the habits i have?

Well when i gave up it was habit of the routine i was getting addicted to rather than the nicotine. Like i would get up have a fag, before left for work have a fag, before got into work had one, on my break and at start and enf of lunch, then when i finshed work, when i got in from work, one after food a a few before bed. It was doing these things and associated that time with having a fag.

As soon as you break the routine it was fairly easy and did it without patches or anything else. Its the routine is the hardest not the actual fag.

What my friend did when she was pregnant is had one of those pen fags with nothing in them. Just blows out fake smoke basically and that helped her quit.

Also get a large jar and everytime you go to buy fags, put the money in the jar and after a week you will be suprised at how much you can save up and thats a good incentive. Also you wont miss the smell as after a week the smell of smoke on your clothes and hands turns your stomach.

Dont get me wrong i like a fag when im having a drink but dont need one after that as ive got out of the habit of associating having one when i get up or have lunch in work.

Good luck irfy but watch what you eat as the myth is true, you WILL put weight on when you give up as its the whole thing about having something in your hand or mouth but then again, ive heard you love that haha

Serious though good luck!

At this point I prefer numbers. 7.9 compared to 9.0

I would wish you good luck with quoting smoking, but no. Not anymore.

I think them pills chemically stop you wanting a cigaret, but if you smoke in the first few days it can be very very dangerous!!!!!!!

As far as i know there is a very high success rate with them Irf! Go On have a go! You can do it!

Once you have got the initial stop out of the way its just a case of then saying NO every 30 mins of the day very day till you lose the craze of them, I managed to stop smoking for for 6 years! but then started again after coming home and finding my fiancee bouncing up and down on top of a stranger and pregnant by some guy from work!!!! Shit happens PSML!

So come on Irf get to the Doc's and stop and if you suddenly decide to fold and have one? you can call me night or day

I could start with a joke; I'd love to stop smoking but I can't afford to buy and run a T5 Posted Image

But on a more serious note; good luck Posted Image

As others have said, you have to break the addiction cycle or routine and provide yourself with alternative reward system.

I've had friends give up and put the money they'd normally spend into a large jar in a conspicuous place in the house.  They were quite amazed how soon it built up into a tidy sum.

Be careful about your eating as Lottie says, or using food as a reward. Remember why the government actively promoted smoking during the last war - because it supresses appetite and that was useful during the years when strict food rationing was normal.

In the same way as you use smoking as reward system, I use exercise and holidays. For instance, yes I would love to have a T5 and mod it (hindsight is a wonderful thing re my D5) but rather than chuck more money that way I prefer to save to go skiing and ride the bike around the world and they ain't cheap on equipment or travel costs. The reward is getting to the bottom of black run on two planks of wood with thighs on fire or blasting down a strip of tarmac in the sun with just a pice of polystyrene foam on my bonce and lycra between me a nasty dose of gravel rash or worse. Excercise and the high after the pain is my addiction (plus the exercise does me good apart from when it does go wrong Posted Image ).

And surely, if you don't want your kids to get the same habit is that not a damn'd good reason...................

I aslo find this quite off-putting http://www.google.co...0l1031l8.3l11l0

edit: how about trying a (forum) sponsored quit smoking and raise money for a good cause. There's enough time between now and Combe............

Don't let your age define you. It's a number, that's all.

Nasty D5 dieseasel with few twiddly bits from TWR, MTE, IPD and Eibach but 600 miles to a tank ain't to be sniffed at :-)

If you want to stop for your children and to save money why don't you man up and make a fucking effort?

Are your fags more important than you childrens health? You say your Son wants to be like Daddy so if you carry on I'm sure he will be...

Oh wait, if you carry on bitching about it but doing nothing in a few years you may get around to quiting but by then chances are your son will of followed in your foot steps. I hope he gets his will power from him mum and not you.

tim, let it all out, get it off your chest, i'm listening Posted Image

cant fault a word you've said to be fair, i'd say the same thing. then after a few hours the brains just screaming for a fag and then you dont care who is saying what, you just want a fag.

right now, i can feel that urge is about to start so got the inhalator on the go, gonna have something to eat then go out for a quick drive.

i've tried before and failed but i'm actually more confident this time like it can be done. told the mrs to expect me to be a bit moody so intend to take full advantage Posted Image  Posted Image

i used to smoke 30 a week at one point was smoking from the age of 15  i found the best was to stop was by reducing the amount of fags i smoked per day u simpley cant go from 30-0 otherwise you will suffer from cold turkey syndrome (sounds daft but i was diagnosed with panic attacks from going from loads per day to just stopping) i found that going from 30-20 then 20-10 per week worked best for me do this over a time you feel comfatable with then go on to pacthes i did 8 mnths like that then had some stuff go on in the family that made me start again.

but i had a operation last june and never touched one since then i know thats not a option for anyone but cant explain it wasnt planning to stop at the time but tried one after i got back home and couldnt stand it im ok standing next to people when they smoke dont get no urges for one and that the same for when im out on the town that was 7 months ago now.

best thing irf for you to do mate is do what you feel most comftable with try pacthes or even get a starter pack and go from there.

good luck mate hope it goes well for you.

cheers mark

Irf, great thread mate. If you really want to give up and be around for your son into his later life. Go for a run and see how far you go without stopping. You will realise not only are you unfit and not able to run for a long period of time but the only 2 possibilities of smoking are death and spanking loads of cash. I now have approx 3 a week at most but will get that down to zero. Hange your lifestyle and get some exercise. Seeing how unfit I am is usually a great motivator. But Tim summed it up perfectly. Roy
