Anybody with experience of these for domestic computer/s?  It seems you can pay little or a small fortune for one, so any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.  Not lived in the country for five minutes, and we've already had two powercuts Posted Image   Forgotten how romantic candles are Posted Image

Jeff,

most UPS's are only designed to supply power for a few minutes at best to enable a computer to shut down cleanly. Any longer and things rapidly scale in size.

I have a unit like this http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2eb8959d5c in the loft which looks after our server and the back up drives. The other computers have to take their chances.

A small one like this might be suitable for your needs if the outages are only a few minutes: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item27c02cc50e

Don't let your age define you. It's a number, that's all.

Nasty D5 dieseasel with few twiddly bits from TWR, MTE, IPD and Eibach but 600 miles to a tank ain't to be sniffed at :-)

The first ebay one that Robbie posted is quite good.  When I was working at the petrol stations we had a similar unit which could keep 2 tills, the tank monitoring system, phone lines, credit/debit card system and the cctv running for about 20 minutes following a mains power cut.

The first one is cheaper on amazon, as for the second,  is this worth the extra money in comparison? http://www.amazon.co...f=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

The second one is rated at 700VA vs 550VA so it just means it'll last longer when the main power trips (at the same electrical load).

just use a laptop, then it drops to its own battery, and keep wired modem on standby, haven't had power off for a few months, but we usually have 2-3 times a year when its out for best part of a day, when lorries hit the poles at the side of the road - loud bang, power off, 30 mins later village lit up with orange flashing lights as the army of repair vehicles start arriving

I've used/got millions of these.  Dell  make some nice ones now.

Just try lifting the 3kva ones!

At home I've got a Belkin one which actually has 13a sockets which is handy.  For the kettle connection type one you can make a 4 way adapter with kettle connection instead of a 13a plug.

This what I'd buy now if I needed and had the budget, its a 'smart' one.
