LOL, I give up.

Ok I'll play, where is the custard proof of 170mph in a plod P2 T5?  Yes I know highly impracticable, hence it was a joke.

I don't doubt you TBH, I know you need a BIG straight as 160 doesn't come quick in those cars, but 170, if hit, must be biblically slow to reach.

Interesting point, and I respect others knowledge too but why is the speedo labelled RSNotts ?

That's a fairly unusual one then <either that or it was a "Friday Car">.

If the speedo has an RSNotts label on it, then it is calibrated by them - which means the model you were driving wasn't a police spec one, or was a very peculiar one out of SPV - as the default build was for factory calibration (which is exactly the same speedo as a civilian one, but with a different software build).

BTW, 260kmh is 162mph.

Needless to say, you didn't hit 170mph in one with a lightbar on the roof, as the lightbars knock some 15mph off the top end.

The later model P3 cars (07 onwards) all need calibrated speedometers from RSNotts, as due to their infinite stupidity, Volvo decided the police market wasn't worth the hassle by the sounds of things, and completely screwed it up by supplying cars that Run Locks wouldn't work on, stereo's and info panels that couldn't be removed, and floating centre dash's....

And to be entirely accurate - a calibrated speedo doesn't "over-read" - but reads actual correct speed <usually cock on with a GPS Speedo>, whereas non-calibrated civilian speedo's typically read some 5-10% less than their actual speed (as the law says it's fine for a speedo to under-read, but not overread).
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair

I can't show you a tin of birds custard next to the speedo, but I did it in the middle one :-) it was a while ago and it's not something that happens often but it's feasible if traffic conditions allow but going past other traffic 100mph faster than them is not as enjoyable as it sounds.

I will play "custard" when appropriate, but I'm not trying to be a Mitty and regret being honest if a genuine claim is deemed as bull.

I'm not having a moan, I hear all sorts of pub ballcocks about "I did this speed, I do that speed, I can pee higher than you, I've sellotaped a jet engine to my mini now I can go faster than radio waves" and ignore it all.

I only posted the. Speed as a comment about what the car can do, not how fast I have driven or how big my gearstick is.

I retreat humbly to consider my posts and "greater knowledge" ahem. Cough. Ahem.

To be fair, a high top end is infinitely "easier" in something like the middle one, as opposed to your average joe public... certain people don't have to keep an eye out for plod hiding behind bushes Posted Image

After having "done" a Gatso at 160+.... Nothing surprises me anymore Posted Image Passenger in the rear was a little pasty though Posted Image

PS. That lightbar is not likely to knock quite so much off the top end - I bet it whistled well though :P ;)

I missed the post above while I was typing!

When i talk about the speedo being faster, i mean exactly as you say about it being more accurate but im possibly impolitely dumbing down my language - i apologise but i didnt want to sound like i was waffling.

As  for 170 i can assure you as far as I can, we did. The speedo was calibrated, and the needle was well off the scale. We sailed past indicated 160mph and left the scale on the dial behind by at least the same distance as another 10mph. I cannot say it was recorded but we estimated th actual road speed to have been 169mph. It was the car with the low profile bar. It was two up at the time also. We also hit the limiter on the A1 a number of times in a manual V70 four up with ease. I can attest to the gearbox starting to fail at a constant 155 for about 8 minutes - unusually, 3rd gear became unobtainable once the car has been slowed down, what we suspect was the third cog expanding with heat?! This was after a day long run mostly harsh acceleration and motorway driving at 120-130mph.

I have never been on a track day, but have been in what I feel to be a privileged position and be able to drive at very high speeds on public roads, and that is my particular area of knowledge and I accept anybody else's more educated opinions.

I tell you, you had to shout over the damn thing :-) whistle? It screamed. The heat from the engine bay made the car interior heat up which was more uncomfortable, and catseyes don't half make a racket at that sort of speed. The auto was my favourite, but the gearbox went and the man came and trailered it away :-(
