Holset powered s40

58 posts in this topic

The fire started by an oil leak near the turbo. The oil caught fire and couldn't put it out in time. The diff coming out the tranny block started when I got codes for "3rd gear ratio incorrect". Over a short period of time the tranny would go in and out of limp mode and would get very hard shifts into second gear. I did a full tranny flush and it helped for only about a week or so until I took a sharp corner and left me stranded, ugh. I didn't mod it much at all, all I did was a full exhaust and intake and stock boost so I know I wasn't putting much strain on the drivetrain. With the holset build my stock 5spd automatic is going to hate me at more than 300 ft lbs so I gotta keep the torque to a minimum until I'm ready for the m56 swap.

Got the flange done. I wasn't too worried about the flange on the exhaust side but on the engine side I resurfaced it down to .005"

Oh yeaaa, diverter valves came in the mail today! I probably don't need two diverter valves but incase I get compressor surge still with one valve I'll throw on the second one to eliminate compressor surge. The kit comes with a total of 3 springs and two spacers to adjust spring tension.

Made some more headway today. Got all the wires and hoses all marked and ready to attempt to pull the motor tomorrow.

Hey guys. I got the motor in with some very light clearances, literally rubbing both sides on the way in,lol. Here's a link on the install.

Fabrication process  - Turbo needs reclocking as the oil drain plug is way off alignment and the compressor housing as well.

Made a little more head way.

Flushed out a my old 500mile radiator, tranny cooler and intercooler in gasoline and got it installed along with hooking up the coolant system . All is left is fabbing up the exhaust manifold, external dump, making the intake tube from the MAF to the turbo, hooking up the oil feed line and return line, custom downpipe and weld a wideband bung on exhaust, custom 2.75" axle back exhaust with modified stock muffler.

It will live again!

My old T4 was that colour. Brings back some fond memories... It went well too, 370 bhp (K24 turbo). No doubt yours will be quicker!

That car was anything but tame when we played with my 16t equiped C70 (with a big crack in the exhaust housing) i got on boost and pulled maybe a bonnet length on him and just enough time to think "oh this might be cl........" when i heard the S40 come on boost and watched it drive away from me

Yes, 4.8s was the best I ever had out of it.

60-130 is considerably quicker than my 850, and that isn't slow either. If I came across another mint T4 (that one was absolutely mint inside & out, 49K miler when I bought it), I'd do it again.

Nice ride man! What are your tire and rim specs?

As far as power goes I won't be pushing it hard at the moment. Limited with my auto transmission but long term want to swap the m56 in.

I was running 17" 8J or 8.5J rims (the name escapes me at the moment, but they were commissioned by Volvo IIRC) with 235/40/17 Federal RSRs.

Damn, that's a wide tire on a s40,lol. Did you have to cut anything out along the way? I'm going to be building around the hy35 turbo and a 235 tire would be right in line with my build setup.

Update on the car btw everyone. Got my oil pressure line figured out. Was kinda tricky because of the standard and metro combo. Looked online for a few days with no luck. I called up a hydraulics company and got a fitting made up for a very fair price and at my door in two days!

Full 3" stainless steel exhaust and aluminum intercooler piping kit came in the mail finally. Running a full 3" turbo back exhaust with a 3" 180 degree aluminum pipe on the cold side and 2.25 on the hot side. Using the left over intercooler plumbing for the intake tube routing to the maf sensor.

Intake plumbing is all set pretty much. I just need to get some rubber gromments for the lines that connect into the intake tube. Soooo close to being done, wont be sleeping to much tonight knowing she'll be running most likely tomorrow!!!!!
