2.3 T5 engine oil????

8 posts in this topic

Hey all. Recently bought a 2003 Volvo 2.3 T5. Love the car. Now as you do when i got the car back i gave it a really good going over and found a bottle of 10W40 part synthetic oil in the pocket of the front seat. Having worked in a motor factors before, I thought this viscosity was odd. So I looked through the service history which is full Volvo, and I confirmed the oil they put in at the dealer was in fact 10W40.

So now i come to do an oil change I go to a motor factor and enquire about oil. They are saying 5W40 fully synthetic or 0W30 fully synthetic and no mention of the 10W40. So i rang my local dealer and they said they would put 5W40 in it. I then rang the volvo dealer it was last serviced at and they said 10w40.

Just to add the car drives nice. no smoke or oil residue on the exhaust. I am just worried that if i put 5W40 in that the engine might develop leaks.

Can anyone confirm what is the oil to use as I am completely confused.

Thanks

really? why? i would have thought it was one of the most common viscositys going

assuming you arnt going to track it i would run it on a good quality 10w40 part synthetic particulalry so if thats what its been run on previously

The dealer would recommend the x-30 stuff as this is what was specified when the car was new, a lower viscosity oil is better for emissions and economy on a standard fresh car but not good for engine wear as its so damn thin when hot.  Being a 15 year old motor a minimum of 10w40 is recommended, if you are tuning it you may want to consider 10w-60 like most of us run.

For most normal use T5s I use 10W40. I've supplied/fitted 13 T5 engines so far this year for cars that were run on 0/5W30 where the bottom ends failed. I've had one that was run on 10W40 and 0 that were on 10W60 and driven on track.

Zero and five W30 pays for my holidays, "working away", cars and house. Please use it if you want to support me.

Shell Helix Ultra 10W-60.  Hunt around for a good price.  As with most things the bigger the container the cheaper per litre.
