Saab 9-3 Aero

05 September 2011 - 18:52

Right then chaps and chapettes, I thought now would be as good a time as any to start my project thread on here for my recently aquired purchase so here goes....

After a lengthy period of thinking about buying a car to have a bit of a project with i finally decided earlier this year to go down the Saab route, I decided on a 9-3 98-02 Model as a base car and began looking on here and the usual places. I didnt really know what 9-3 to go for but preferred the look of the Viggen or the later Aero models.

Anyway i spotted a Viggen i liked the look of, Went to view it and it had a missfire on the test drive. I was a little put off and gave up looking but with the money burning a whole in my pocket i ended having one last fling and buying a Honda Integra Type R.

I was made a good offer on the Integra about 5 weeks ago so i let it go and again began trawling the for sale ads for a replacement but struggled to get inspired by anything, I started looking at Saabs again and decided i would be more patient this time and wait for the right car to come up.......And it did  Posted Image

As some of you guys now im quite anal when it comes to condition and so im hard work when buying a car as it has be upto scratch bodywork wise before ill even consider buying it. Luckily it was located at a small car dealers in Sheffield and was about 5 mins drive from my work so i had nothing to loose by viewing it, It had only been on the Autotrader website 1 day when i went to view it and was priced very low IMO for what it was. Anyway i went to look at the car and was very impressed with how clean it was, It was advertised as a standard car but has obviously been previously enthusiast owned as it has a few choice extras fitted which the dealer didnt know about....And ofcourse i didnt tell him. Anyway i test drove it, Handed my money over and these rest is history.

Heres the current spec of the car as it is today which is a bit weedy but will no doubt be changing very soon...

Car:

2001 Saab 9-3 Aero, Manual Geabox, Red 3 Door coupe, Currently on 62K miles.

Engine

Standard B205R engine, Custom 3" turbo back exhaust with sports cat and oval tailpipe, Forge FM007 Recirc dump valve.

Chassis/Suspension

Steering rack clamp, 6 point subframe brace, Eibach lowering springs -30mm.

Exterior

Standard Aero alloys powdercoated Anthracite, Smoked side repeaters, Shark fin rood aerial, Now fully debadged.

Interior

Standard Aero interior, Standard CD head unit with uprated Alpine speakers.

Ive got many plans for this car and ive been planning/scheming my options for quite a while now so i know roughly what i want to achieve in the long term. I want to do a bit at a time on the car but not because of money  but rather i want to enjoy the car and see it progress in which case i will not get bored of it as quickly as i would buying car already done.

Firstly over the next few weeks ill be dropping the sump and then giving it an engine service with 5w30 Castrol Edge, Air filter, Fuel filter, Pollen filter and NGK PFR6H10 plugs. Ill also be having a general poke around and make a to do list which ill stick on here when i do.

Im also going to OpenSid later this week and do a few logs to see whats going on at the moment...Maybe stick a stage 1 map on there for now.

Long term plans
Ultimately i want a reliable fast road car that doesnt cost the earth, It is still going to retain its interior and be a comfy car which is nice to drive daily but quick enough to give some expensive machinery a hard time. Thats my end goal and i know this car will give it to me.

Ill be going through all the bushings and uprating, Uprating the suspension, Uprating the braking system and fitting some decent tyres, Im going to build a 2.3 unit with a B234 Bottom end, T7 top end with T5 cams and fit hardware and a suitable turbo to allow 350-400bhp. Uprating the clutch to suit and Quaife LSD will be fitted to the gearbox.

I spent a few hours cleaning and detailing the car yesterday and today, I wont go into my full list of what i do as i know you chaps are not into that sort of thing but heres a few pics from earlier of the car....

Many thanks for reading the above, Sorry if ive rambled on.

Anyone know who owns this 850R????

16 August 2011 - 17:19

As per title.....

http://www.pistonhea...les/3042576.htm

I am quite tempted by this car, Id change the exhaust, Remove the tints and and change the map on the ECU Posted Image but it would make for a good base for me to start with. Looks like its been looked after having had the PCV done and most of the other stage 0 parts replaced.

Honda Integra Type-R, Championship White, UKDM, #6206

26 July 2011 - 17:47

After giving much thought to selling my Integra over the last few months ive decided that now is the time and so here is the advert.....

I bought the car earlier this year off a fellow ITRDC2 forum member, Since buying the car ive covered a mere 2500 miles in it, Ive done a few minor things such as an Oil & Filter change using Castrol Edge 5w40 Fully Synthetic and a Hamp filter, Fitted some new NGK PFRG7-11S plugs, Painted all the calipers and fit a replacement OSF Indicator unit due to a chipped lense but in reality the car is totally complete and needs nothing else doing other than routine servicing in the future.

The car has had some extensive recent work/upgrades carried out by TGM to improve the car and also freshen the car up, The result is a very well set up fast road car thats an absolute pleasure to drive on a daily basis without been too hardcore but is still OEM looking and in immaculate fresh condition both inside and out.

I have very high standards and i would safely describe the car as MINT condition, Its been enthusiast/ITRDC2 forum member owned since 2005 and this shows in the cars condition both inside and out. Its regularly detailed by myself using the finest cleaning products, Polishes and Collintes waxes. Its always run on V-Power or BP ultimate fuel.

I dont need to go into any of the usual rust issues which most UKDM's suffer with as it doesnt have any. Anyone in the Honda scene who knows or has seen this car in the flesh at meetings will vouch for its condition it often gets commented on. All the underside is fully undersealed, The arches are all painted as are all the subframes and wishbones etc. I doubt there are many UKDM models in the country this good.

Heres the spec of the car...

The price is £5600ono, I am open to sensible offers but this car really needs to be seen to be appreciated and i have no doubt that the first genuine buyer to view the car will buy it!

I could be tempted by a P/X but im not 100% sure what im after next but id prefer a cash deal if im honest.

The car is located in Sheffield not far from the M1 and Sheffield train station.

Bad points:

Both are very minor and dont really detract away from the cars conditon but i like to be honest...

The A/C doesnt work which is due to the idler pulley on the A/C belt failing on the previous owner and so the belt was removed and ive never bothered to do anything about it as id never us the A/C even if it worked.

The car has no spare wheel, Again not really a problem as plenty of these come up on cars that are been broken for spares.
That pretty much sums it all up.

Heres some pictures of the car taken at the weekend....

My weekend at the Spa Francorchamps Classic

31 May 2011 - 22:46

Just got back from an Awesome 5 days in Belgium at Spa Francorchamps, Sadly i missed out on the historic Le-Mans in France last year which i wanted to go to but a good friend of mine asked me if i wanted to go to the Spa Classic instead earlier this year and so that was that.

It was a proper time warp weekend, The noise, Smell and sound of the cars there was mindblowing for any car enthusiast and was for me far more exciting than anything of todays motorsport offerings....IMO ofcourse!

We drove over in a 1978 VW camper from Sheffield and went from Hull to ZeeBrugge on the overnight ferry then drove the rest of the way to Spa, Ive always been into the historical side of Spa and its original circuit which was similar the Nurburgring in length and difficulty. We actually camped at a small campsite about 3 miles from the circuit near a village called stavelot and looking on Google the road which lead to our campsite was part of the original circuit and is just a general road nowadays.

There where about 6 different catagories of car that where racing over the weekend from Classic Italian, Group C 80s Le mans, 60s & 70s endurance cars and Boss GP.

Sadly the Boss GP and Group C cars where kept well away from the public while i was there so i didnt get any pictures of them and my panning shots are crap so didnt manage any of them on the circuit either.

I took loads of pics and here are some of my favourites, Some are just general pics for memory and a few are arty shots although as im still learning

A few of the circuit and paddock areas....
