In Topic: How much do you spend maintaining your Volvo?
20 April 2012 - 10:09
IIRC (over MANY years) I've owned 9 Volvo estates and except for normal wear items I've spent virtually nothing.
My V70 phase 1 which I had for 14 years only needed a brake master cylinder; but I suspect that my phase 3 will be much more delicate.
But my wife’s 345 Volvo - bought 3 years old @ 30K miles, with full Volvo Service History was a different story.
It was bought from a friend at the end of a lease and very inexpensive because many body panels had several small dings and dents (it had lived opposite a pub in London!).
I won’t go into the list of its problems whilst we struggled to keep it on the road, but by the time we came to get rid of it about 3 years later, the engine was fv€ked; it burned/lost huge quantities of oil, lost water, would lose almost all power after a couple of miles unless you stopped and gave it an initial rest, and made alarming rumbling noises (from the main bearings?).
The windows would not wind down (yes wind), the exterior driver’s door handle
had broken off, and many parts of the body were starting to rust badly.
At the time, I was buying a used 940 from a main dealer and had already negotiated a good price, on the condition of no car to part exchange
(we were going to dump the 345).
Whilst I was hesitating to sign, the dealer asked what else he could do to finally persuade me. I said he could take my wife’s Volvo in part exchange.
He asked me all about it and I told him every detail of the ugly truth.
He replied that he had never heard anybody run down their own car before to such a degree, and said he would do something he’d never done before, and that was if I signed for the other car there and then, he would give me £500 for the Volvo without seeing it, if I could get the car to him.
When he saw it (when I collected my other car) his face
dropped, he told me that my description was SO bad that he didn’t initially believe me, after all, how could a 6 year old, 60K mile, 2 Owner Volvo with FSH be like that?
A week later the dealer rang to ask if we had the second key.

In Topic: Blake fluid change - What to go for?

I change fluid on my road car every two years and on my track car every year.
I've been told (urban myth?) that the flexible hoses are permeable to water and given enough time, water can find its way into the system via the hoses.
The only disadvantage of SRF is the price of it!
